To start—can you tell us a bit about yourself? How did you get into investigations, and what drives your work today?
I was recently honourably discharged from a top cyber intelligence agency, after over a decade of leading various operations and investigations units. I had the opportunity of using my skills in a more civil attire in the US.
In your experience, what’s one skill or mindset every great analyst should have—and why?
Always continue learning -stay humble!
What’s a trend or challenge in digital investigations that you think deserves more attention right now?
I’m currently leading investigations in the field of bot networks and influence (disinformation) campaigns. I find that it is intriguing to reveal the true unsocial nature of social media networks.
A lot of people in the field look up to professionals like you—what advice would you give someone just starting out in OSINT or analysis work?
There’s almost always a way in or around. Learn, be patient and try again.
And finally—what’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? Any hobbies, passions, or routines that help you recharge outside of work?
The way for me to clear my head is a good gravel bike ride.
Anything else you'd like to add or share?
I believe that AI isn’t a replacement for a sharp analyst just yet, but can definitely speed things up! Theater are some great tools out there - especially when it comes to dealing with Mass databases.
