Eyes wide shut - investigation challenges for trust and safety teams
What is inside this white paper?
Trust and safety teams play a vital role in protecting users and the wider public from a wide variety of threats – but there are still significant challenges involved in running both on- and off-platform investigations:
Threat awareness:
For most platforms, there is no reasonable or convenient reporting system to help trust and safety teams detect or prevent off-platform threats.
Data collection:
Accessing the data for off-platform investigations is much more difficult, and requires a specialized set of skills. The process is time consuming, requires expertise in dozens of disciplines, and is almost impossible to do at scale.
Data analysis:
Systems that claim to allow trust and safety teams to analyze data at scale are often unintuitive, slow, inefficient, and not optimized for the trust and safety domain.
Data visibility:
Trust and safety teams are often siloed as a result of company bureaucracy and excessive data storage regulations, making it difficult to access up-to-date data and collaborate with other teams.
Regulatory risk:
Trust and safety investigations are subject to rigorous data use and storage regulations, and investigators must constantly consider how to protect both impacted users and those being investigated.
Vendor management:
External investigative firms and vendors often provide trust and safety teams with (often excessively) complex reports and data sets, regularly in formats which must be manually analyzed, wasting valuable time and resources.
Cross-platform cooperation:
Cooperation with other companies can be highly valuable, but is limited by legal and regulatory constraints on sharing on-platform information; mismatched tools, data, and data management practices; and differences in workflows between companies.
Tackling these challenges requires a holistic, data-driven approach, whereby multidisciplinary trust and safety teams can securely collect, store, and analyze data on and off their platforms at scale.
The data that trust and safety teams collect must also be easy to analyze, so that team members and decision-makers can be provided with actionable insights.
However, the market for investigative and analytical platforms is lacking in this area, forcing trust and safety teams to rely on legacy or ill-fitting software solutions.
Falkor provides trust and safety analysts with the tools they need to ingest, enrich, and analyze data sets of any size through one centralized, optimally visible analyst operating system.
